How big do chrysanthemum plants grow?

Up to 1500mm high and 600mm wide.

What are the suitable growing conditions for Chrysanthemums?

Chrysanthemums are suitable for full sun or part shaded areas, and suitable for most soil types. Chrysanthemums are suitable for pots or garden beds with good drainage. Minimal water requirement.

Are chrysanthemums suitable for growing in arid conditions such as the Mallee in Victoria?

Yes, chrysanthemums can grow in dry climates and in most soil types (clay, sand etc). It is wise to protect the plant from the westerly sun, and ensure that the plant does not become over dry.

What does it mean when it says "the flower can grow up to 100mm if grown on 3 main stems?"

This means that the flower can grow up to 100mm in diameter, if you cut off the extra stems that grow, only leaving 3 main stems for flowers to develop on. It is a good idea to remove all the side buds as well, leaving only one main bud on each stem to achieve the largest blooms. This will allow the plant to put all its energy into making fewer but larger blooms.

Are chrysanthemums suitable for pots or garden beds?

Yes, suitable for both pots and garden beds.

When will my cuttings produce flowers?

Depending on where you live, chrysanthemums bloom from late April to late June. New cuttings will produce blooms in the following season around May.

Do I need to fertilise or mulch?

Fertilise with slow release fertiliser every 6 months. Chris also uses a rose fertiliser. Mulching is optional.

Are chrysanthemums susceptible to pest and disease?

Yes. Common pests are aphids, white fly, earwigs, caterpillars and spider mites  .

Common diseases include white rust.

Do chrysanthemums require much water?

No, as a rule chrysanthemums do not require much water, but they do not like to be too wet or dry. Well draining soil is ideal.
